As the fourth leading wine producer in the world, California wine is a key industry of the state with a rich history dating back to the 1700’s. California wineries, mostly family-owned, make decisions for the long-term in order to pass on a thriving business to future generations.
Today, California’s 4,100 wineries produce 90 percent of all U.S. wine while its 5,900 winegrape growers farm more than 110 varieties of winegrapes in 49 of the state’s 58 counties. Winegrapes are one of California’s top five agricultural crops, and wine is the state’s number one finished agricultural product in dollar value.
The statewide organizations representing the interests of vintners and growers are: Wine Institute, the association of California wineries with members representing more than 90% of state production, and the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), representing 60% of state winegrape acreage. The two organizations created the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance in 2003 to promote adoption of sustainable practices across the state.

Sustainable winegrowing practices in both vineyards and wineries help California vintners make high quality wines and provide a healthy and beautiful environment for employees, neighbors, and wine country visitors. Sustainable winegrowing can include biodynamic or organic farming practices.
Some examples of sustainable practices include:
- sheep and beneficial birds to control weeds and pests
- cover crops, drip irrigation and process ponds to conserve water
- composting, recycling and reuse to minimize waste
- protecting air and water quality
- preserving local ecosystems and wildlife habitats
- practicing environmentally preferred purchasing
